Kids’ parties

With children, age is the only thing that matters.

Mascots, up to six

Soft, child-height, no sudden moves. They let themselves be hugged and photographed.

Scripted shows, from six up

Twenty to forty minutes with a beginning and an end. The only acts that get a room quiet.

Colour and height

Bright walkabout characters that let children come close. They work in a garden, a park or a big party.

Up to about six, mascots win: small, soft, huggable, and they frighten nobody. Between six and ten it changes completely — that is where Transformers belongs, the robot that unfolds in front of them and then stays for photos, or the magician, the only act that gets a room properly silent. Past ten, children want something they can tell the class about the next day: unicycle jugglers, giant soap bubbles, the colourful stilt characters.

Two practical notes from experience. One forty-minute act works better than three fifteen-minute ones, because children need time to come closer. And if the party is at home, measure the ceiling first: Transformers needs 2.5 clear metres to stand up, otherwise it stays a robot on wheels, which is a very different afternoon.
